Automation Tester

Help Qepos build reliable EPOS, web and business software by designing strong automated testing coverage across real customer workflows.

Job Purpose

The Automation Tester will be responsible for designing, developing and maintaining automated testing solutions for the company’s EPOS software and associated applications. The role will help ensure that QEPOS’s systems operate accurately, reliably and securely across the hospitality, retail and cash-and-carry sectors.

The postholder will test core business functions such as sales transactions, payment processing, product and price management, stock control, order processing, reporting and system integrations. They will work closely with software developers and relevant operational teams to identify defects, improve test coverage and support the controlled release of reliable software to customers.

Main Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain automated test scripts and reusable testing frameworks for QEPOS’s EPOS software, web applications and related systems.
  • Automate functional, regression, integration, system and end-to-end testing across relevant software products and releases.
  • Test essential EPOS workflows, including product configuration, sales transactions, discounts, refunds, payment processing, receipt generation, inventory updates and management reporting.
  • Develop automated test scenarios reflecting the operational requirements of restaurants, takeaways, cafés, retailers and cash-and-carry businesses.
  • Test integrations between EPOS software and connected services such as payment terminals, online ordering platforms, printers, stock-management functions and third-party applications.
  • Conduct API, database and user-interface testing to verify the accuracy, consistency and integrity of data exchanged between different system components.
  • Create and maintain test plans, test cases, test data, traceability records and documented acceptance criteria.
  • Execute automated test suites, examine test results and investigate failures to distinguish genuine software defects from environmental or test-script issues.
  • Perform manual and exploratory testing where automation is unsuitable or where additional investigation is required.
  • Record, classify and track defects, providing developers with clear replication steps, supporting evidence and an assessment of the operational impact.
  • Work closely with developers to investigate defects, verify corrective work and perform regression testing before software is released.
  • Integrate automated tests into the company’s software build and deployment processes so that defects can be identified at an early stage.
  • Test system performance, stability and reliability under realistic transaction volumes and concurrent-user conditions.
  • Verify that software continues to function correctly across supported hardware, operating systems, browsers, devices and customer configurations.
  • Identify areas of insufficient test coverage and recommend improvements to the company’s testing tools, frameworks and quality-assurance procedures.
  • Produce test execution reports and communicate software-quality risks, unresolved defects and release-readiness findings to management.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation relating to automated tests, test environments, defects and testing outcomes.
  • Keep knowledge of software-testing practices, automation tools and EPOS technology up to date and apply relevant improvements to the company’s quality-assurance processes.
  • Support post-release investigations by reproducing reported software issues, carrying out root-cause testing and developing regression tests to prevent recurrence.

Person Specification

  • Relevant professional experience in software quality assurance and automated testing.
  • Experience designing, developing and maintaining automated test scripts and testing frameworks.
  • Experience undertaking functional, regression, integration, system and end-to-end testing.
  • Experience testing web-based, desktop or business software applications.
  • Knowledge of software-development and testing lifecycles.
  • Experience identifying, documenting and tracking software defects.
  • Understanding of API testing, database validation and user-interface testing.
  • Ability to understand technical requirements and convert them into structured test cases.
  • Experience working with developers and other technical stakeholders to investigate and resolve defects.

Technical Skills

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate competence in: at least one recognised test-automation framework; at least one programming or scripting language used for test automation; API testing and validation; SQL queries and database testing; source-control and defect-management systems; automated regression testing; test-data preparation and management; troubleshooting and analysis of test failures; and producing clear technical test reports and documentation.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience testing EPOS, retail, hospitality, inventory-management, ordering or payment-processing software.
  • Experience testing integrations between software and external hardware or third-party applications.
  • Experience with continuous integration and deployment environments.
  • Knowledge of performance, load, security or cross-platform testing.
  • Experience working in an Agile or Scrum development environment.

Personal Competencies

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to software quality.
  • Ability to investigate complex defects systematically.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to organise competing testing priorities and meet release deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a technical team.
  • Sound judgement when assessing software risks and release readiness.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and protecting business and customer information.

Why Qepos

  • Work on practical software used by hospitality, retail and cash-and-carry businesses.
  • Collaborate closely with developers and operations teams on meaningful release quality.
  • Contribute to automation coverage across EPOS, web, integrations and data workflows.
  • Join a UK-based technology team focused on reliable customer outcomes.
